THM: What to wear?

Ok, so I am back on my tiny house kick. In fact, for those of you who don’t know or don’t remember, I have decided to retire to a tiny home made of shipping containers. Doing this means I need to pare down my belongings and at some point rent a tiny house for several weeks to live in and check out how I like it. Back to my tiny house mentality (THM) as it relates to clothes. I have been hearing a lot and reading a lot about “capsule collections.” Recently I was flipping through a clothing catalog and the company touted an exclusive Eileen Fisher Capsule Collection. What the heck is a Capsule Collection “A capsule collection is essentially a condensed version of a designer's vision, often limited edition, which transcends seasons and trends by being functional — read commercial. They often focus on construction and delivering key looks, without the styling and theatrics of a show.” — BusniessofFashion.com Then I remembered reading many years ago in the New York Times, an article about the 6 item diet. No, not that kind of diet. The premise of the article was to answer the question: Could you choose only 6 items from your clothes and be able to wear them over the course of a month? Now, I’m thinking of not just cleaning out my closet but having my own “capsule collection” of basics to pair with some statement pieces, mainly tops, sweaters, and jackets. This makes shopping easy and my annual summer trip to my favorite boutique when I go to the family house in MA, more worth wild. This idea pushes the Marie Kondo philosophy of “Does it spark joy?” out the window. Not that I subscribed to her philosophy anyway. Heck that Nicole Miller dress in my closet sparks joy.; I look damn good in it! However, it is a formal dress and I can count on one hand the number of formal events I have been to in the last 5 years and since they honored the same family members each time, I couldn’t wear the dress more than maybe twice. Out goes the dress simply because I have other items I can pair together for the off chance that I get invited to another formal event. Hopefully not for the same family members, so they have a break. Alright then, my boutique trip will be to find statement pieces that I can pair with jeans, simple black pants or my favorite black pencil skirt.

(P.S. I would like to further state that I intended to keep a black blazer as part of my capsule collection for any time I need to look “professional” or have a funeral to attend. But being that I want statement pieces, my black blazer is the tuxedo jacket to the tuxedo my father had before he died almost 30 years ago. The satin lapels give it a “statement” feel.)
