The Lifetime...

…Achievement Award goes to (fill in your name here).

I was reading an article on Matthew McConaughey in the latest issue of AARP magazine (and no they didn’t lower the age to receive it, it is my mother’s). In it he talks about writing life goals and there is even a photo of them. He wrote them after filming Dazed and Confused and shortly after his father died. His list of 10 goals included win an Oscar for best actor, spend more time with mom and family, become a father, to name a few (check, check and check).

Upon reading this it occurred to me that we all should have life goals. In fact, I probably should have written mine at the very most 25 years ago. When you graduate college or are in your early 20s, you may not know where your life is headed. However, you probably have ideas on where you would like it to go and the things you would like to accomplish. My list won’t include winning the Tour de France, considering that I ride an adult trike and not very often.

So what would my life goals include?

  1. become an author

  2. be my best self

  3. be the best mom I can be

  4. follow my passions

  5. be grateful every day

  6. take care of my physical body and my mind

  7. meet a man who loves, supports, and cherishes me

Some day, I may add a few more to get to 10 like McConaughey.

One thing to keep in mind is that items on a bucket list and life goals are two separate things. My bucket list includes items like visiting the Pyramids of Giza, ride a scenic train across Banff Park in Canada, see works by Gaudi in Spain, to name a few. You can see the difference with my life goal list.

I think when my daughter is 25, I’ll ask her to write down her life goals and put the list in her wallet so she always has it to look at. So what are your life goals?

(P.S. You are never too old to write them down.)
