Bears, oh my!

While some of us prefer the beach and oceans, others of us prefer to hike in nature and splash in a waterfall. Just like with the beach you need to be safe, have the appropriate gear, and pack the right food.

According to Hiking Guy, the most important gear to have is a water bottle, satellite GPS (in case your phone has no bars) external phone charger, protein-dense snacks (salted nuts, protein bars, tuna/salmon packets), water bottle, bug repellent and shoes with good support. From my days at sleep-away camp, also a poncho and wool sweater (wool absorbs water, keeping your skin warm and dry in rain). Hiking Guy also suggests these items in case of emergency: a first aid kit, water filtration, whistle, and extra food.

Now that you are gear ready. It is time to plan the perfect hike. First, pick the route you will take based on your hiking ability and make sure you and anyone hiking with you know the route. Read the rules of the park to know what’s allowed and not allowed. And be sure to pack in and pack out all garbage. “Be prepared. Just like the weather, nature can be unpredictable. So even if you’re only planning a short day hike, it’s good to be prepared. Carry some essentials like water, snacks, matches, a flashlight, a pocket knife, and a small first aid kit. Hopefully you won’t need these items. But if anything unexpected happens, you’ll be glad you brought them along.” — Justin Metz, Erie Insurance

As mentioned above the right snacks. They call it trail mix for a reason. You can buy it or just as easily create your own which will be healthier. From the Healthy Maven:

Customizable Trail Mix

1 1/2 cups raw nuts (i.e. almonds, pecans, cashews, peanuts, etc.)

1 cup raw seeds (i.e. sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc.)

1 cup unsweetened, unsulphured dried fruit

Fun stuff (amounts vary: i.e. 1/2 cup chopped dark chocolate, 1 cup popped popcorn, 1 cup pretzels, etc.)

Optional Spice (i.e. 1/4 tsp sea salt, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, a pinch of nutmeg)

You can set these ingredients out in larger quantities in individual containers on your counter (trail mix bar) and have your hiking party make their own. It is still a good idea to pack a few protein-rich snacks just in case.

Don’t forget the sunscreen and remember to enjoy yourself!
