"Arise, ye slumbers from your sleep."

The other day I read in the prayerbook, "In what ways do my heart, mind and soul need to be awakened by the Shofar?" The Shofar is the ritual rams horn blown on the Jewish New Year. I got to thinking that if we left the Shofar our of the question, it becomes a secular question that reads, "In what ways do my heart, mind and soul need to be awakened?" Since the Jewish New Year, or more specifically the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are a time of reflection, I have been thinking about this question. I realized that the answer could easily be a yearly goal making it the perfect question to ask on December 31st or January 1st. If your answer is travel, then plan out some more travel time during the year. If your answer is to read more, maybe join  a book club or start your own. For me, my answer at the moment is to cook more, meaning try new recipes, learn new techniques and explore exotic spices. I just hope that my daughter doesn't go for a bowl of cereal to replace my home cooked new recipe dinners too many times.
