Motivation?
Lately, it seems that I am not motivate to do certian things..exercise, fix minor house issues or even eat healthy, evidenced by day trip yesterday where I had a Bacon, egg and porkroll; sandwich and then, ice cream. So I went to blog archive to see if I had written about motivation and what I could learn about it. What I learned is that you just need to start to get motivated…
It has been some time since I wrote and published my weekly blog post. The last one was on setbacks because my computer was having a problem. Well, the problem was solved. So the issue this time is motivation.
I recently heard the saying “You don’t motivate to do, you do to motivate.” And I just wasn’t feeling the weekly blog post, so I didn’t ‘do.” Now I am back. So let’s talk motivation!
According to Oxford Languages, motivation means “the reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way.”
So how do we do, if were not feeling it. The answer is “momentum.” “Once you build momentum, you will often find you no longer care if you are busy or not. You just want to keep making progress by continuously doing the right things.”— Live Your True Story The first thing to do in creating momentum is to make a plan. Simply put, map out the steps it takes to complete the project or the pertinent details. Once you have a plan, you know where to begin and can do so.
But you ask, “What if I make a plan and I am still not starting the project?” Then ask yourself this question, “Why?” and keep asking this till you peel back all the layers. The reason for my not writing a blog post was I couldn’t come up with a topic. I have a plan for my blog post and details about the posting I do after the blog is published. Still, I just had to wait until I thought of a topic that I wanted to write on. Believe it or not, I write all my blog posts myself and do the necessary research on the topic to be sure that I am writing with authority (sometimes, I recycle an old blog post)
So why momentum not motivation? Motivation requires an outburst of energy to get going, kind of like going 0-60 in 3 seconds. This is not likely to happen for most of us and if it does, we tire out or even burn out afterwards. Think of it like a rollercoaster that builds up to the drop; this is momentum (About Progress). This is why we want to start with momentum for doing a project, work or task and wait for the motivation to develop as we go.
I apologize for the few and far between blog posts so far for 2023. I hope that I can build momentum (and come up with topics) for the weeks and months to come. And if I can’t. I can always recycle an oldie and a goodie. So, as you feel yourself winding down on some of your yearly goals/resolutions already (yes, I am speaking to you who went all in on getting healthy), try to restart it with budling momentum. And hopefully, motivation will follow.
