Get talking!

Sometimes our emotions have us feeling like we're on a ride at Disney. That is how I felt this week. Don't worry, this is natural. Just ask a woman about her emotions and PMS. One day, I am gung ho and getting a lot done— exercising, eating healthy, checking emails, and catching up on my favorite shows (Odyssey and the original NCIS). The next day, I am lethargic, snacking a lot (finishing a bag of kettle corn), and barely touch my computer. What gives?! I learned recently about "self-talk." Psych yourself up with words of positivity. Going forward, on the days I am in a "down" mood, I will tell myself, "You can be productive today. You can honor your body and eat healthy, and exercise today. And best of all, you can love yourself today." So far, just telling myself that I am 100% all in on my health is enough to get me to do a yoga class on the day that I finish the kettle popcorn.

 What is self-talk?

"Many people use self-talk, either internal or aloud, to motivate themselves, and research shows that it can be beneficial, if done properly. In a study, people who used the first-person when talking to themselves before a task were less effective than those who spoke to themselves in the second- or third-person. Creating psychological distance in our self-talk, then, can help us calm down and face challenging moments." —Psychology Today.
